Record #166454:

The Franz Josef Glacier, Westland, in the 19th and 20th centuries A.D. / Colin J. Burrows.

Title: The Franz Josef Glacier, Westland, in the 19th and 20th centuries A.D. / Colin J. Burrows.
Author(s): Burrows, Colin J.
Date: 2001.
Publisher: Christchurch: Rebus Publications
Abstract: Presents 19th and 20th century chronology of Franz Josef glacier, Westland, New Zealand. Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and most studied. Describes glacier's setting and morphology, presents topographic map with recorded terminus positions and morphological features such as roches moutonnées, Lists sources of information on glacier extent (paintings, photographs, etc.) and studies of glacier fluctuations from 1865 onwards. Provides short account of inferred glacier positions prior to 1865. Briefly describes causes of fluctuations in context of wider New Zealand glaciation, including behaviour of Fox, Mueller, Tasman, Dart and Stocking glaciers. A general recession 1909-1980, during which terminus retreated about 3.5 km, was punctuated by three short advances. Terminus advanced from 1980-1999, but is now receding.
