Title: 'Southward Ho!' (by way of the Arctic): references to the Arctic and the promotion of Antarctic exploration in Clements R. Markham's anniversary addresses as President of the Royal Geographical Society, 1894-1905 / Mary Jones.
Author(s): Jones, Mary.
Date: 2003.
In: Northern Studies. (2003.), Vol. 37 (2003)
Abstract: Focuses on Markham's frequent reference to British Arctic exploration as setting precedent for his planned Antarctic expedition. Prior to Markham's presidency, anniversary addresses reviewed geographical developments throughout the world during the previous year. Markham, in contrast, made use of them to make the case for future exploration, particularly of Antarctica.
