Effect of environmental conditions on observed, modeled, and assimilated sea ice motion errors / Walter N. Meier, James A. Maslanik.

Title: Effect of environmental conditions on observed, modeled, and assimilated sea ice motion errors / Walter N. Meier, James A. Maslanik.
Author(s): Meier, Walter N.
Maslanik, James A.
Date: 2003.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (2003.), Vol. 108(C5) (2003)
Abstract: Examines Arctic sea ice motions over several years within framework of assimilation into 2-d dynamic-thermodynamic sea ice model. Investigates effects of local conditions on remotely sensed, modelled and assimilated motions. Summarises ice motion sources and briefly describes assimilation method. Examines ice motion errors based on: proximity to coast, ice thickness, and wind forcing. For both modelled and remotely sensed ice motions, errors relative to buoy observations are lowest for moderately thick ice and low winds, and away from coasts. Assimilation generally improved quality of ice motion field. Suggests basing assimilation weights on local model conditions may improve quality further.
