Millenial and sub-millenial-scale variability in sediment colour form the Barra Fan, NW Scotland: implications for British ice sheet dynamics / Lindsay J. Wilson, William E.N. Austin.

Title: Millenial and sub-millenial-scale variability in sediment colour form the Barra Fan, NW Scotland: implications for British ice sheet dynamics / Lindsay J. Wilson, William E.N. Austin.

Date: 2002.
Publisher: London: Geological Society
In: Glacier-influenced sedimentation on high-latitude continental margins. (2002.),
Abstract: Evaluates characterization by spectrophotometry of millennial-scale events at site of 30 m giant piston core MD95-2006 from northern limits of Barra Fan. Places record in context of amphi-Atlantic climate change. Examines response of British Ice Sheet (BIS) to global cooling through Marine Isotope Stages MIS3 to MIS2 transition using sediment colour and reflectance. Presents new radiocarbon-based age-depth model for core. Describes reflectance spectrophotometry, measurements of particle size and calcium carbonate content and time series analysis. Describes lithostratigraphy and colour variability. Marked increase in sediment accumulation rate at ca. 30 ka BP, with BIS reaching outer continental shelf, suggests response in phase with climatological MIS 3-2 transition.
