Abstract: | Explores how recent experimental and theoretical work on shear mixing between static sediment layers and overlying turbulent water flows can constrain rates and processes of shear mixing along submarine debris flow margins. Reviews mixing processes for submarine debris flows and experimental studies of shear mixing. Estimates mixing rates at variable flow velocity and compares them to critical velocities necessary for (i) hydroplaning and (ii) transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Uses comparison to investigate mixing behaviour of debris flows with a 'strong' or 'weak' rheology, the former approximating that of glacigenic debris flows on high-latitude continental margins. Analysis illustrates why submarine debris flows may display highly variable mixing behaviour. |
