| Abstract: | Examines Quaternary development of upper Glen Avon, a 200 m deep glacial trough within high plateau of Cairngorm Mountains, Scotland and considers implications for ice-stream development in mountainous areas. Reconstructs basal thermal regime of glaciers formerly covering area by mapping bedforms indicative of wet-based, sliding ice and dry-based ice frozen to bed. Modifies Budd's simple steady-state approach to modelling basal temperatures by accounting for converging and diverging flow. Models ice sheets at c. 18 ka BP covering: (a) reconstruction of preglacial relief; and (b) current topography. Concludes many ice streams in mountainous terrain inherited from locations of preglacial valleys. In special issue Palaeo-ice streams. |
