Abstract: Addresses high rates of sediment generation and transport beneath West Antarctic ice streams. Quantifies effects of till ploughing by basal ice bumps using new time-dependent flow-band numerical model that includes ice and till continuity, ice thermodynamics and mechanical and hydrologic interaction between till layer and ice base. Applies model to Ice Stream C (Kamb Ice Stream) over ca. 8500 model years. Modelled magnitudes and spatial patterns of till transport and sub-till erosion generally agree with existing constraints on modern and palaeo-ice streams of Ross Embayment. For example, erosion rates are higher beneath ice stream tributaries than beneath ice stream trunks. In special issue Palaeo-ice streams.
