Abstract: Investigates possibility of till consolidation driven by basal freeze-on beneath a stagnating, mid-latitude palaeo-ice stream. Focuses on Baltic Ice Stream, advancing into Denmark ca. 15 ka BP. Adapts concepts from frost heave simulations in permafrost engineering to develop 1-D numerical model coupling ice-stream dynamics to transient changes of sub-ice-stream till properties. Model includes pore-water flow driven by hydraulic gradients induced by supercooling of ice base. Predicts postglacial till strength profiles using SHANSHEP method. Shows that, despite a relatively mild palaeo-climate, bases of mid-latitude palaeo-ice streams may have experienced period of basal freezing due to horizontal advection of cold ice.
