Record #165734:

Reconstructions of western Ross Sea palaeo-ice stream grounding zones from high-resolution acoustic stratigraphy / Ian M. Howat, Eugene W. Domack.

Title: Reconstructions of western Ross Sea palaeo-ice stream grounding zones from high-resolution acoustic stratigraphy / Ian M. Howat, Eugene W. Domack.
Author(s): Howat, Ian M.
Domack, Eugene W.
Date: 2003.
In: Boreas. (2003.), Vol. 32(1) (2003)
Abstract: Analyses acoustic profiles of two mid-shelf troughs formed by palaeo-ice streams, JOIDES Basin and Pennell Trough in western Ross Sea, Antarctica. Presents fully processed CHIRP sonar data (highest resolution acoustic data from Antarctic continental shelf). Examines stratigraphy of subglacial and glaciomarine deposits to compare grounding zone sedimentation in two troughs and illuminate sediment transport mechanisms. Correlates stratigraphy with sedimentological data to: (1) determine influence of trough bathymetry on subglacial sediment distribution and ice-stream configuration; (2) interpret general rheology of ice-stream beds; and (3) explore mechanisms of ice-sheet retreat. Concludes combination of topography and available soft sediment controls ice stream formation. In special issue Palaeo-ice streams.
