| Abstract: | Examines continental slope sedimentation at ice-stream termini. Addresses: (1) whether ice streams terminating at shelf break consistently form trough mouth fans (TMFs); (2) physical controls on sedimentary architecture of continental slopes at ice-stream termini; and (3) variability of sedimentary processes and resulting deposits and whether glacigenic debris flows dominate. Draws on examples from Laurentide, Greenland, Fennoscandinavian and Antarctic ice sheets. Outlines classical TMF model and provides new conceptual model of continental slope sedimentation in front of palaeo-ice streams. Warns that absence of large sediment fans on continental slopes in front of cross-shelf troughs does not imply former absence of palaeo-ice streams. In special issue Palaeo-ice streams. |
