Abstract: Investigates resumption of Atlantic thermohaline circulation (THC) during deglaciation, using 3-d ocean circulation model to simulate impact of Southern Ocean warming and associated sea-ice retreat. Includes simple thermodynamic sea-ice model, new temperature and salinity advection scheme, and parameterization of overflow. Describes model experiments starting from quasi-steady glacial climate. Applies interglacial values of Southern Ocean temperature, sea ice and wind stress south of 30° S in various scenarios as surrogates for Southern Hemisphere warming. Finds gradual Southern Ocean warming during deglaciation induces abrupt resumption of interglacial (conveyor belt) mode of THC and 6°C North Atlantic temperature rise. Investigates deglacial Heinrich sequence by simulating impact on THC of meltwater discharge to Atlantic Ocean.
