Record #165404:

The evolution of ridged ice fields / Mikko Lensu.

Title: The evolution of ridged ice fields / Mikko Lensu.
Author(s): Lensu, Mikko.
Date: 2003.
Publisher: Espoo: Helsinki University of Technology
Abstract: PhD dissertation investigating evolution of ridge spacing distribution in sea ice fields. Explains work's importance for dynamic ice drift models, ice-navigating ships and estimation of ice loads exerted against offshore structures. Equations governing ridge spacing and ice thickness distribution are specific formulations of Kolmogorov-Feller equation. Obtains usual lognormal and exponential distribution models for spacing as solutions. Explains several statistical features observed in ice surface profile data from Baltic and Kara seas. Links evolution of ridge spacing to ice area decrease and fields of concentration and strain rate. Introduces new feature, a ridge cluster, to describe ridges in keel contact. Alternative formulation governs distribution of ridge sail number density along line segments.
