Record #165285:

Über die Art und Zeit der Zähmung des Renntiers / U.T. Sirelius.

Title: Über die Art und Zeit der Zähmung des Renntiers / U.T. Sirelius.
Translated title: On the manner and date of the taming of the reindeer.
Author(s): Sirelius, U. T.
Date: 1916.
Language: German.
In: Suomalais-Ugrilaisen Seuran Aikakauskirja = Journal de la Société finno-ougrienne. (1916.), Vol. 33 (1916)
Abstract: Describes archaeological remains that led, wrongly, to speculation on origins of (half) taming of reindeer in times of Alexander or Roman Empire. Herodotus's mention of nomads does not associate them with reindeer. Lassoing wild deer among Nenets in 1899 is described, so even they did not entirely limit themselves to tame or half tame animals. Saami use of draft and riding deer is noted, but often in hunting context, and ancient sleds hold evidence, but not of datable nature,as do remains of fences.
Notes:
