| Abstract: | Brief report in Science on paper presented at meeting of United States Naval Institute at Annapolis on 9 October 1885 by member of Jeannette expedition; advises against further Arctic exploration north of 85° on grounds of risks involved and little expected scientific gain. View supported by George Melville, Sir George Nares, and Adolphus Greely, opposed by Joseph Nourse and Hinrich Rink. Further discussed by Emil Bessels and Clements R. Markham, journal concludes that scientific, as opposed to merely commercial, research will continue. |
