Abstract: Constructs surge history and flow configuration of Sortebrae complex from aerial photogrammetry, remotely sensed imagery and moraine configurations. Identifies two surges, one around 1950 and another between 1992 and 1995. Describes use of multi-model photogrammetry to estimate elevation changes due to 1990s surge and height of calving margin. Surface lowering varied between 11 and 219 m. Thickening in the receiving zone reached 74 m. Uses elevation changes to estimate 18.6 ± 0.4 km³ ice redistributed from reservoir zone, roughly one third of which was stored in the receiving zone, the remainder being calved or melted. Estimates calving front advanced at least 5 km in <1 yr. Estimates length of surge and quiescent phases, surge and quiescent velocities and propagation velocity of surge front. Compares these and topographic and surface features with those of other surging glaciers. Tentatively suggests a surge mechanism of the Alaskan type involving a switch in subglacial drainage.
