Abstract: | Addresses use of temperature measurements made over snow with naturally ventilated instruments to determine sensible-heat flux and snowmelt rates. Reports measurements from melt season in the Kärkevagge, Abisko Mountains, Swedish Lapland. Describes instruments, their ventilation, radiation protection and response times. Analyses differences between temperatures measured by naturally ventilated and aspirated instruments (occasionally a few °C). Errors are associated with low wind speed and/or high upwelling short-wave radiation. Models effect of radiation on naturally ventilated instruments by considering heat fluxes and thermal balance between ambient air, sensor surface and sensor. Describes a temperature correction method based on optimising unknown model parameters. Corrected temperatures improve calculation of sensible-heat flux of a melting snow surface using bulk- transfer or bulk-aerodynamic methods. Corrections inadequate for vertical profile-based methods. |
