Record #164681:

Growth and drainage of supraglacial lakes on the debris-mantled Ngozumpa Glacier, Khumbu Himal, Nepal / D.I. Benn, S. Wiseman, K.A. Hands.

Title: Growth and drainage of supraglacial lakes on the debris-mantled Ngozumpa Glacier, Khumbu Himal, Nepal / D.I. Benn, S. Wiseman, K.A. Hands.

Abstract: Seeks to assess future response of Himalayan debris-mantled glaciers to climate change and the associated glacier lake outburst flood (GLOF) hazard potential. Constructs a qualitative model of supraglacial lake evolution based on field observations of a range of lake types and their changes over time. Focuses on Ngozumpa Glacier, a 25 km long valley glacier that has undergone significant recent downwasting. Glacier has numerous supraglacial ponds and lakes on its debris-mantled ablation area, and may lie close to a threshold for rapid lake coalescence and expansion. Discusses in detail two "perched" lakes (with no connection to englacial drainage system) and a moraine-dammed lake drained through a subaerial incision. Describes observations of subaerial melting, thermo-erosional notching at the water line and calving. Identifies a number of controls on lake evolution, e.g., the opening and closing of connections from perched lakes to the englacial drainage system.
