Subglacial deformation: evidence from microfabric studies of particles and voids in till from the upper Ürümqi river valley, Tien Shan, China / Chaolu Yi, Zhijiu Cui.
Title: | Subglacial deformation: evidence from microfabric studies of particles and voids in till from the upper Ürümqi river valley, Tien Shan, China / Chaolu Yi, Zhijiu Cui. |

Date: | 2001. |
In: | Journal of Glaciology. (2001.), Vol. 47(159) (2001) |
Abstract: | Deals with microfabrics in till caused by subglacial deformation. Examines fabrics formed by flat particles, 0.25-5.0 mm in diameter with aspect ratios ranging from 1:2 to 1:4 and, for the first time, considers the microfabric formed by elongate microscopic voids. Uses microfabrics to determine whether till has bean sheared subglacially. Describes sampling sites, which include moraines, roches moutonnées and drumlins. Deposits sampled ranged in date from Wangfeng glaciation (19-21 kyr B.P.) to 1960s. Describes impregnation of samples with cyanoacrylate glue for transport and subsequent sectioning for analysis. Presents rose diagrams of till fabrics and statistics of grain orientations. Discusses interpreting 3-D fabric from planar thin sections. Presents field evidence that those tills with strong particle and void microfabrics have undergone subglacial deformation. Fabrics on stoss side of two roches moutonnées and a drumlin are strong, but those on lee sides are weak, suggesting the till here was not sheared significantly. |
