Abstract: Seeks to enhance knowledge of oceanic biogenic sulphur cycle and to evaluate past levels of biological activity in the oceans. Examines seasonality of methanesulphonic acid (MSA) deposition in firn at 700 m a.s.l. on Collins Ice Cap, King George Island. Region is believed to have high marine phytoplankton production. Describes excavation and sampling of snow-pit and sampling of core. Presents sulphate, non-sea-salt sulphate and MSA concentrations in upper 10 m of core. Calculates MSA/nss SO₄²⁻ ratio. Seeks to explain unexpected autumn MSA peaks. Suggests large accumulation rate (~ 4 m a⁻¹) should help limit percolation of meltwater into deeper layers and migration of chemical species through firn. Also provides some local observational support for high autumn MSA aerosol concentrations. Concludes, however, that two of three peaks in MSA may largely result from elution of ions in the presence of liquid water and their relocation at greater depths through salt formation.
