Abstract: Studies diurnal variations of melt regions on the Greenland Ice Sheet from the summer melt to the fall freeze-up in 1999. Uses changes in relative backscatter differences between early morning and late afternoon measured by the SeaWinds scatterometer on the QuikSCAT satellite to delineate melt regions daily. Uses vertical-polarisation data, which provides twice- daily measurement of entire Greenland Ice Sheet. Results are verified with in-situ measurements from several Greenland Climate Network stations. Discusses factors influencing backscatter from snowmelt and how diurnal backscatter change reflects surface conditions via wetness change. A small change indicates the dry snow zone, for example. Presents sample time-series images of summer melt patterns. Observes close relation between melt distribution and topography. Approach allows consistent inter-annual monitoring as well as observations of weather events on a daily time-scale. Discusses warming event on 21-22 September 1999 in detail.
