Record #164663:

Frazil-ice entrainment of sediment: large-tank laboratory experiments / Lars Henrik Smedsrud.

Title: Frazil-ice entrainment of sediment: large-tank laboratory experiments / Lars Henrik Smedsrud.
Author(s): Smedsrud, Lars Henrik.
Date: 2001.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (2001.), Vol. 47(158) (2001)
Abstract: Examines how efficiently frazil ice crystals can entrain sediment into surface sea-ice layer. Describes four laboratory experiments intended to simulate natural freezing processes in shallow Arctic seas and performed in a 20 m long, 1 m deep tank, with durations up to 24 hours (comparable to time-scale for ice formation in Arctic leads or Polynyas). Presents measurements of current, frazil-ice concentration and crystal size, sediment concentration and particle size and discusses them with reference to earlier experiments and natural conditions. Quantifies heat fluxes and turbulence. Finds entrainment depends on high heat fluxes and sufficiently strong turbulence, with preferential entrainment of smaller particles. Mass of entrained sediment increased over time for given level of turbulence. Sea-ice formed contained sediment concentrations up to 11 (generally 2-4) times higher than those in water.
