Abstract: Seeks to identify variations in spatial and temporal mass-balance distributions on Greenland Ice Sheet. Aims to establish degree of confidence to be placed in any Greenland global mass-balance value. Identifies about 250 sites of mass-balance survey in the literature and notes their inhomogeneity in terms of what precisely was measured over what period. Presents statistical analysis of records from 60 sites. Describes establishment of unique representative series for each site. Presents large-scale analyses for parts of the ice sheet, e.g., 'centre of the accumulation area' and 'northern part ' and, briefly, for entire ice sheet. Reports consistency over greater distances in ablation area than in accumulation area. Only a dozen series in total give consistent results. These are concentrated on the southwest edge and on a west-east profile in the centre of Greenland. For about two thirds of the ice sheet, no usable data were available. Annual variability in mass balance is significant compared to the mean. Warns that current estimations of global Greenland mass-balance must be 'rather uncertain' and urges use of long time series.
