Transmission of stress between an ice stream and interstream ridge / I.M. Whillans, C.J. Van der Veen.

Title: Transmission of stress between an ice stream and interstream ridge / I.M. Whillans, C.J. Van der Veen.
Author(s): Whillans, I. M.
Van der Veen, C. J.
Date: 2001.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (2001.), Vol. 47(158) (2001)
Abstract: Addresses the transfer of lateral shear force from the body of an ice stream, through the shear margin, to the bed beneath the interstream ridge, stating that this ultimately controls the maximum width, driving stress and speed of the ice stream. Reports on a measurement program of velocity and strain rate adjacent to the intensely crevassed southern shear margin of Ice Stream B2. Previously reported measurements are extended from the margin onto the nearly stagnant interstream ridge. Uses a simple, mainly analytic, two-dimensional (vertical and transverse to the ice stream) model to examine how stresses are converted from lateral drag to basal drag. Shows that basal drag reaches 60 kPa at the extreme inboard edge of the studied region and decreases away from the ice stream to near-zero over a 3 km zone, beyond which basal drag does not oppose ice stream motion. Finds that within the ice stream <40% of the ice thickness carries significant lateral drag, this being converted to basal drag over a span of about 1 km. Ice Stream B was renamed Whillans Ice Stream in 2001 in memory of I.M. Whillans.
