Characteristics of a crater glacier at Ushkovsky volcano, Kamchatka, Russia, as revealed by the physical properties of ice cores and borehole thermometry / Takayuki Tarawa, and 8 others.
Title: | Characteristics of a crater glacier at Ushkovsky volcano, Kamchatka, Russia, as revealed by the physical properties of ice cores and borehole thermometry / Takayuki Tarawa, and 8 others. |
Author(s): | Tarawa, Takayuki. |
Date: | 2001. |
In: | Journal of Glaciology. (2001.), Vol. 47(158) (2001) |
Abstract: | Aims to clarify characteristics of a glacier that fills an active volcanic crater by investigating the mass balance and subsurface temperature of glacier at summit of Ushkovsky volcano. Reports drilling of 211.70 m ice core, during which some 328 ash layers wore cutters rapidly. Dates some of the ash layers using known eruptions in area. Discusses crystal size and orientation fabrics in core and makes inferences about stress field at depth. Deduces from borehole thermometry that ice here is frozen to the bed and estimates volcanic heat flux at base to be one to two orders of magnitude lower than predicted. Concludes that borehole temperatures are non-stationary. Proposes two depth-age relationships for drill site, based on different bottom melting regimes. |
