Abstract: Describes detailed measurements of blue-ice ripples from five sites in the Heimefrontfjella, Dronning Maud Land. Most of surface of blue ice areas visited displayed ripples. Records wavelength, wave height, wave speed and orientation. Wave height (1-2 cm) and standard deviation increased with time at all sites during summer observation period. Traditional stake or acoustic height sensor methods therefore underestimated ablation. Ablation greater in troughs than on crests. Reports ripples forming in 1 month from initially flat surface and significant downwind migration of ripples at one site. Ripples oriented perpendicular to direction of strongest winds, suggesting regular spatial variations of wind-induced sublimation as cause. Presents simple linear model in which ice-ripples generated by free instability of coupled ice-airflow system. Modelled ripples with the observed wavelength of 20-24 cm are able to grow. Those with wavelengths smaller than 16 cm are suppressed.
