Abstract: | Seeks to aid characterisation and understanding of past and present temporal variability of surface elevation changes. Follows earlier analysis due to Van der Veen, in which present climate characterised by a Gaussian distribution of annual accumulation rates, but adopts a longer-term perspective and considers firn densification explicitly. Forces time-dependent firn-densification and ice- and heat-flow model with data from the GISP2 deep ice core to estimate history of elevation changes through the late Holocene in central Greenland. Computes statistics that characterise elevation change over past 30-1000 years and thus provides benchmark for future changes and a basis for distinguishing between climatic and dynamic causes of observed elevation change. Estimates standard deviation of net elevation change over 5 and 10 year intervals at 0.27 and 0.38 m, respectively. |
