Significant marine-ice accumulation in the ablation zone beneath an Antarctic ice shelf / A. Khazendar, J.-L. Tison, B. Stenni, M. Dini, A. Bondesan.

Title: Significant marine-ice accumulation in the ablation zone beneath an Antarctic ice shelf / A. Khazendar, J.-L. Tison, B. Stenni, M. Dini, A. Bondesan.

Date: 2001.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (2001.), Vol. 47(158) (2001)
Abstract: Describes site on Nansen Ice Shelf from which a 45 m core was drilled in 1995-96 and presents results of high-resolution multiparametric measurements showing that properties of entire core correspond to those of marine ice. Stresses the significance of retrieving such a core from so close to grounding line. Excludes possibility of formation by deep thermohaline circulation. Proposes instead mechanism of accretion of marine ice in basal crevasses opening where meteoric ice goes afloat. Envisages local ice pump, in which buoyant Ice Shelf Water enters and ascends crevasse to become supercooled and form frazil ice. Ice formed by direct freezing, which might be expected in upper parts of basal crevasses or rifts is not observed in the core.
