| Abstract: | Describes choice of site for 121 m ice core and previous ice core studies in Svalbard. Details sampling and analytical methods for deep core and for a number of shallower cores from nearby Nordenskjöldbreen. Presents accumulation data from shallow cores and analyses of water isotopes, major ions and methanesulphonic acid (MSA) from the uppermost 36 m of the deep core. Establishes time-scale using 1963 bomb test horizon and seasonal variations in ion records. The latter persist despite possibility of percolation of summer meltwater at drill site. Finds that temporal variations in records on decadal scales agree with local climate and environmental records. Identifies potential for dating lower part of core and extracting high-resolution environmental and climatic data from earlier period. |
