Modelling heat flow in a cold, high-altitude glacier: interpretation of measurements from Colle Gnifetti, Swiss Alps / Martin P. Lüthi, Martin Funk.

Abstract: Addresses combined numerical modelling of ice and heat flow in small, cold high altitude glaciers to aid interpretation of paleoclimatic data from ice cores. Identifies factors that complicate analysis of heat-flow processes, e.g., non-vertical heat fluxes arising from complex mountain topography and phase transition at permafrost boundaries within bedrock. Heat-flow model includes effects of latent heat. Solves advection-diffusion problem. Ice flow model including firn deformation and compaction calculates velocity distribution and density field. Models are coupled iteratively. Discusses applications to two boreholes to bedrock on Colle Gnifetti, Monte Rosa. Describes temperature measurement and presents results. Models transient heat-low and finds measured temperature profiles inconsistent with steady state, mainly because of high temperatures since 1980. Examines future scenarios and expects basal temperatures to change considerably in near future.
