Abstract: Examines whether firn line or equilibrium line is visible on airborne SAR imagery of Austre Okstindbreen. Uses (mostly) C-band cross-polarisation images HV to discriminate between snow/firn and ice surfaces. Discusses backscatter variation generally and analyses boundary observed at about 1250 m a.s.l., above which backscatter is considerably greater than that found below. Models stratigraphy from net balance and surface velocity data to help exclude possibility of boundary being equilibrium line. Identifies boundary as firn line created in previous years and deformed by glacier movement. Suggests that similar lines may have been misidentified as equilibrium lines in previous studies. Suggests that, as well as being more feasible with SAR, firn-line monitoring may reveal smoother, longer term climate response than equilibrium line monitoring.
