Abstract: Presents new model for examining shape of glacial valleys. Variable width/depth ratio model characterised by two parameters, m, a measure of the breadth of the valley bottom, and n, a measure of the steepness of the valley sides. Observes that previously glaciated valleys are not always U-shaped and expects model to improve ability to identify them. Fits 56 valley cross-sections, using data from both sides. Discusses simple valleys and compound valleys, with one or more major tributaries. In simple valleys bottom broadens and sides steepen from head to equilibrium line and the reverse occurs from there to the valley end. In compound valleys similar pattern occurs with some oscillation in sections of confluence. These variations are thought to reflect longitudinal changes in a glacier's potential for erosion.
