Mapping thermal and hydrological conditions beneath a polythermal glacier with radio-echo sounding / Luke Copland, Martin J. Sharp.

Title: Mapping thermal and hydrological conditions beneath a polythermal glacier with radio-echo sounding / Luke Copland, Martin J. Sharp.

Abstract: Uses high-resolution radio-echo sounding to study hydrological and thermal regimes of polythermal glacier in Canadian high Arctic. Analyses the presence/absence of an internal reflecting horizon and the spatial variability in bed reflection power (BRP) to identify distribution of warm- and cold-based ice. Finds distribution of BRPr (BRP corrected for variations in ice thickness) not attributable to dependence of attenuation on englacial temperature. Relates BRPr instead to basal conditions, with cold basal ice in the accumulation area and warm basal ice in the ablation area associated with low and high BRPr respectively. Correlates areas of particularly high BRPr over ablation area with observed and predicted locations of subglacial drainage and infers dependence of BRPr on distribution of water at glacier bed. Interprets a continuous internal reflector over areas of high BRPr that dips rapidly close to the glacier margin as boundary between cold ice above and warm ice below.
