Record #164639:

Evidence for rapid retreat and mass loss of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica / Eric Rignot.

Title: Evidence for rapid retreat and mass loss of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica / Eric Rignot.
Author(s): Rignot, Eric.
Date: 2001.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (2001.), Vol. 47(157) (2001)
Abstract: Uses differential interferometric SAR to calculate surface velocities and tidal displacements on Thwaites Glacier and the associated floating tongue. Finds grounding line has retreated by about 1.4 km over period 1992-96 but that surface velocities on grounded ice have not changed significantly. Calculates that ice discharge exceeds net accumulation over the drainage basin by some 30%. Lists some possible causes involving rapid ice flow. Estimates high (10 - 30 m a⁻¹) basal melt rates beneath two areas of floating ice tongue. Observes that large part of tongue is undergoing a solid body rotation under the influence of ocean currents while a smaller part is more ice shelf like. Tongue exerts nearly no back pressure on inland ice.
