Abstract: Defines low-latitude climate regimes: inner tropics, outer tropics and subtropics, and their respective glacier regimes. Identifies ratio of melting to sublimation and duration of ablation period as variables describing the principal differences between the glacier regimes. Describes model to calculate vertical mass balance profiles (VBPs) and calibrates it with data from a mid-latitude glacier. VBPs are then modelled for the low-latitude regimes and compared with observations on glaciers in the inner tropics and outer tropics. Uses a two- season (humid and dry) approach for outer tropics. Discusses sensitivity of the equilibrium line altitude to climate variation. Finds glaciers of the humid inner tropics most sensitive to variations in air temperature and those of the dry subtropics most sensitive to variations in air humidity.
