Abstract: Presents oxygen isotope analyses from two sites (above and below the equilibrium line) on the temperate Norwegian glacier Austre Okstindbreen. Investigates relationship between local climatic conditions and isotopic variations during snow accumulation, influence of meltwater percolation and processes of homogenisation of isotopic composition. Finds isotopic variations in winter snow that persist through 1-2 months of subsequent ablation. Concludes that isotopic records from temperate glaciers can usefully reflect trends in local climatic conditions, especially temperature.
