Abstract: Addresses contrast in iceberg calving rates for given water depth between tidewater glaciers and those calving into fresh water. Presents 1998 observations from Glaciar Nef and reviews history of retreat. Finds onset of runaway recession in 1994 lagged transition from grounded terminus to calving one by over 50 years. 1998 calving rates exceeded those modelled for a land based terminus but are many times smaller than those for a tidewater glacier of similar water depth.
