Record #164617:

Meteorological conditions over Antarctic blue-ice areas and their influence on the local surface mass balance / Richard Bintanja, Carleen H. Reijmer.

Title: Meteorological conditions over Antarctic blue-ice areas and their influence on the local surface mass balance / Richard Bintanja, Carleen H. Reijmer.
Author(s): Bintanja, Richard.
Reijmer, Carleen H.
Date: 2001.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (2001.), Vol. 47(156) (2001)
Abstract: Discusses meteorological conditions over Antarctic blue ice areas (BIAs) located in the lee of mountains. Relates these to surface mass balance and compares them to those over nearby snowfields. Uses meteorological and glaciological data from Dronning Maud Land collected in 1997/98 and notes that conditions over BIAs are warmer, dryer and more gusty. Higher sublimation rates over BIAs are attributed equally to warmer, dryer conditions and to difference in surface characteristics (higher albedo of blue ice, etc.)
