Record #164616:

Crevasse patterns at the onset to Ice Stream B, West Antarctica / S.F. Price, I.M. Whillans.

Title: Crevasse patterns at the onset to Ice Stream B, West Antarctica / S.F. Price, I.M. Whillans.
Author(s): Price, S. F.
Whillans, I. M.
Date: 2001.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (2001.), Vol. 47(156) (2001)
Abstract: Uses combination of surface velocity measurements obtained from tracking features in sequential satellite imagery and modelling to describe patterns of strain-rate and stress and to model crevasse development. Progressively younger crevasses are found to have been initiated further upstream over time. Identifies onset of crevasse formation with onset of ice stream flow and finds it to have migrated upstream at 230(16) ma⁻¹. Cause unknown, but suggested to involve changes in production or storage of subglacial water near ice-stream onset.
