Abstract: Presents surface motion measurements from 1994 made on the glacier tongue. Compares previously reported configuration of sub-glacial drainage system with observed patterns of velocity, strain rate and force balance before, during and after a period of enhanced surface velocity. Basal drag calculated using a simple block-flow approach which assumes horizontal strain-rates are depth independent. Concludes that during a spring high-velocity event, areas of low basal drag are associated with high surface velocity and uplift and preferred subglacial drainage and afterwards with low surface velocity and surface lowering.
