Record #164384:

Sex and age dependency of wing patch size in brown skuas / Steffen Hahn, Hans-Ulrich Peter.

Title: Sex and age dependency of wing patch size in brown skuas / Steffen Hahn, Hans-Ulrich Peter.
Author(s): Hahn, Steffen.
Peter, Hans-Ulrich.
Date: 2003.
In: Emu. (2003.), Vol. 103(1) (2003)
Abstract: Investigates relationship between wing patch characteristics and individual traits of 118 brown skuas at Potter Peninsula, King George Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, from 1998-2001. Patch size was sex dependent, females having larger patches. Age and patch size were positively correlated, size increasing up to 13 years. Neither body condition or reproductive success of breeding birds was related to patch size, but breeding birds of both sexes had larger wing patches than non-breeding birds. Discusses hypothesis that wing patches in Catharacta antarctica lonnbergi act as signals for reproductive ability but not as ornaments coding individual quality for body condition and reproductive performance.
