| Abstract: | Documents food of king penguins at limit of breeding range in Falkland Islands in 2001, with particular reference to food and feeding ecology of species in summer. Describes prey and compares with food of king penguins at other localities, and with food of other penguin species breeding at Falkland Islands. Uses prey biogeography and stable-isotope measurement technique of carbon and nitrogen to examine trophic level and feeding grounds of birds foraging in complex area characterized by various water masses and fronts. Birds performing long foraging trips during brooding stage may feed for themselves in distant waters, and feed for chick on way back to colony. |
