US Southern Ocean JGOFS Program (AESOPS): Part III / W.O. Smith, Jr., R.F. Anderson, eds.

Title: US Southern Ocean JGOFS Program (AESOPS): Part III / W.O. Smith, Jr., R.F. Anderson, eds.
Author(s): Smith, W. O.,
Anderson, R. F.,
Date: 2003.
Abstract: Collection of 14 articles presents results of US Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS). Examines quantities and controls of fluxes in Southern Ocean and processes that control primary production in both space and time, and uses results to model processes that were dominant in past environments. Topics include primary productivity and its regulation; accumulation of biogenic and lithogenic material during past 40,000 years, both in Pacific sector. Primary productivity and in situ quantum yields in Ross Sea and Pacific Sector of Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Effect of marginal ice-edge dynamics on production and export; phytoplankton growth and biological response to iron and zinc addition; potential contribution of fecal pellets from large copepods to flux of biogenic silica and particulate organic carbon in Antarctic Polar Front; role of biominerals in sinking flux and preservation of amino acids, all along 170°W. Temporal dynamics of flagellated and colonial stages of Phaeocystis antarctica; assessing collection efficiency of sediment traps using ²³⁰Th and ²³¹Pa, both in Ross Sea. Ratios of Si, C and N uptake by microplankton; methodologies for determination of true particulate organic carbon; scavenging of ²³⁰Th, ²³¹Pa and ¹⁰Be and the importance of particle flux, particle composition and advection; modelling controls of phytoplankton production, all in southwest Pacific sector. Impacts of iron control on phytoplankton production in modern and glacial Southern Ocean.
