US Southern Ocean JGOFS Program (AESOPS) / Walker O. Smith, Jr, Robert F. Anderson, eds.

Title: US Southern Ocean JGOFS Program (AESOPS) / Walker O. Smith, Jr, Robert F. Anderson, eds.
Author(s): Smith, Walker O.,
Anderson, Robert F.,
Date: 2000.
Abstract: Collection of 18 articles presents first results of research cruises in Ross Sea and Pacific sector of Southern Ocean along 170°W, from 1996-1998. Topics in Ross Sea include seasonal evolution of hydrographic properties in 1996-97; seasonal cycle of phytoplankton biomass and primary productivity; net and gross production as determined by incubation experiments and dissolved O₂ studies; trace metal concentrations and their relationship with nutrients and phytoplankton growth; stocks and dynamics of dissolved and particulate organic matter; constraining bacterial production, conversion efficiency and respiration, January-February 1997; microzooplankton herbivory; predation by Oithona spp. on protozooplankton; biogeochemical regimes, net community production and carbon export; nutrient and carbon removal ratios and fluxes; seasonal patterns of water column particulate organic carbon and fluxes; short-lived thorium isotopes (²³⁴Th, ²²⁸Th) as indicators of POC export and particle cycling; vertical flux of biogenic and lithogenic material, based on moored sediment trap observations 1996-98. Other topics include effects of iron enrichment on phytoplankton in Southern Ocean during late summer with particular reference to active fluorescence and flow cytometric analyses; spring bloom in Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone as observed from mesoscale array of bio-optical sensors; iron and silicic acid concentrations regulation of Si uptake north and south of Polar Frontal Zone in Pacific sector; coupling of biological and physical regimes across Antarctic Polar Front as reflected by nitrogen production and recycling; and particle fluxes to interior of Southern Ocean in western Pacific sector along 170°W.
