Feasibility of DINSAR for mapping complex motion fields of alpine ice- and rock-glaciers / Thomas Nagler, Christoph Mayer, Helmut Rott.

Title: Feasibility of DINSAR for mapping complex motion fields of alpine ice- and rock-glaciers / Thomas Nagler, Christoph Mayer, Helmut Rott.

Rott, Helmut.
Date: 2002.
Publisher: Noordwijk: ESA Publications Division
Abstract: Investigates potential of differential SAR interferometry (DINSAR) to map motion fields of small alpine ice and rock glaciers. Describes test sites of Hintereisferner and several small side glaciers, and rock glaciers in Ötztaler mountains, Austria. Describes DINSAR topographic and movement analysis, providing image, baseline and coherence information. For Hintereisferner, uses 1-day tandem image pairs and assumes motion surface parallel. Discusses velocity field and errors, compares with field measurements and air photo analysis. For rock glaciers uses 35-day repeat, but finds shear too intense to be resolved in some areas. Concludes technique useful, even for glaciers less than 1 km², but small scale details of velocity fields are not resolved. Presented at Third International Symposium, 'Retrieval of Bio- and Geophysical Parameters from SAR Data for Land Applications', Sheffield, UK, 11-14 September 2001.
