| Abstract: | Describes mass change during moult in royal penguins at sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island in 1995, and estimates energetic costs and prey-consumption rates required to fuel moult. During pre-moult foraging trip individuals increased in mass by 3 kg. Moult lasted 28 days and birds lost 46-47% of pre-moult mass. Estimate of food required to fuel this stage in life cycle of royal penguins is 1.39 x 10⁷ kg, which constitutes important component of overall energy budget. |
