Abstract: Examines extensive diel vertical migrations of myctophid fish Electrona antarctica and nototheniid fish Pleuragramma antarcticum in deep basins beneath Croker Passage, Antarctica Peninsula. Because water column is nearly isothermal, and prey do not perform significant vertical migrations, sole advantage of migrations appears to be avoidance on visually-cued predators in upper part of water column. Evaluation of relative importance of three selective factors supports suggestion that predator avoidance many also be principal driver of diel vertical migrations for midwater fish at lower latitudes.
