Dietary variation of the squid Moroteuthis ingens at four sites in the Southern Ocean: stomach contents, lipid and fatty acid profiles / Katrina L. Phillips, Peter D. Nichols, George D. Jackson.

Title: Dietary variation of the squid Moroteuthis ingens at four sites in the Southern Ocean: stomach contents, lipid and fatty acid profiles / Katrina L. Phillips, Peter D. Nichols, George D. Jackson.

In: Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom. (2003.), Vol. 83(3) (2003)
Abstract: Examines spatial variations in diet among squid collected from Macquarie Island, Falkland Islands, Chatham Rise and Campbell Plateau. Myctophid fish were prominent prey items at all sites; diet at Falkland Islands contained large proportion of cephalopod prey, probably due to absence of key myctophids and abundance of smaller squid such as Loligo gahi and juvenile Moroteuthis ingens over Patagonian Shelf. Lipid class and fatty acid profiles of digestive gland indicated that diet of M. ingens differed significantly between Chatham Rise and sub-Antarctic Campbell Plateau, possibly due to reduction in food availability at Campbell Plateau.
