Time spent in Exclusive Economic Zones of southern oceans by non-breeding wandering albatrosses (Diomedea spp.): implications for national responsibilities for conservation / D.G. Nicholls, M.D. Murray, E.C. Butcher, P.J. Moors.

Title: Time spent in Exclusive Economic Zones of southern oceans by non-breeding wandering albatrosses (Diomedea spp.): implications for national responsibilities for conservation / D.G. Nicholls, M.D. Murray, E.C. Butcher, P.J. Moors.
Author(s): Nicholls, D. G.

Butcher, E. C.

Date: 2000.
In: Emu. (2000.), Vol. 100(4) (2000)
Abstract: Reports time spent in EEZs by 14 non-breeding wandering albatrosses, Diomedea exulans exulans, Diomedea exulans gibsoni, and Diomedea exulans antipodensis, satellite-tracked in Southern Ocean eastwards from 30°E to 70°W. Discusses results in relation to overlap of ranges with longline fishing and conservation of albatrosses. Considerable time spent by non-breeding albatrosses in EEZs, including those around sub-Antarctic islands, gives host nations opportunity to establish measures to greatly reduce seabird bycatch losses from longline fishing, while mobility of albatrosses between EEZs of different nations indicates potential usefulness of International Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (Bonn Convention)
