Abstract: Assesses prevalence and periods of tick infestation in relation to presence of adult king penguins on shore at colony on Possession Island, Crozet Archipelago; and determines impact of tick infestation on breeding performance of hosts. Tick feeding activity was coincident with periods of six or more days ashore. Levels of infestation varied between years, and penguins showed lower incubating success in infested areas during year of high infestation. Individuals seen with ticks also showed lower breeding success in rearing one-year old chick.
