Abstract: Describes characteristics of area, special nature of fjords, Barents Sea, polynyas, "cold" and "warm" years, and their effects on production. Link between marine and terrestrial ecosystems, migrating and nesting birds and mass water flow, food chains, marine mammals, monitoring and research programmes, pollutants and tourism are discussed. Biological system is relatively robust, with no evidence of effects of global warming, apart from some Atlantic species in benthos along West coast. Recommendations cover fishing, oil, use as climate indicator, long time series and some trawling limitations where cultural remains are likely.
